Peter is known for leading tours that are not focused on the accepted historical perspective that can be gained from any Google search. He seeks to invite travelers to feel, to see, to intuit, to download and commune with the energies and spiritual presence throughout this sacred land. Peter has learned that a shaman walks between the world of the seen and the unseen, and will lead us in meditations to assist the travelers with letting go and opening up to all that is available to us. Peter has become a shaman of sorts, and will be assisting travelers to enter in-between states to even more deeply experience what the sites want to share with us. Peter puts it, “I find that sacred sites have a spiritual and living sort of “QR code” and if you are open to it, the site, the guardians, the spirits, will speak with you”. He will be teaching this technique.

Ana Maria Calderon, Magical Cusco Tour manager, will be traveling with us to assure that all of our arrangements are smooth and as anticipated. She has been with Magical Cusco Tours for over 20 years and this will be her 4th tour with Peter. She is very excited to travel with the tour group and make new friends and catch up with old ones too.

She will be assisting, behind the scenes, to make sure all our needs are met and the tour proceeds smoothly.

Day 1:  Thursday September 10
Arrival in Lima, Peru

  • The Lima airport is Jorge Chávez International Airport (airport code LIM). You can arrive at your convenience that day.
  • The hotel is connected to the airport by an airbridge.

Day 2: Friday September 11
Flight to Cusco
Arrival at Wifala Harmony Hotel (3 nights)

  • After breakfast, we will proceed to catch our flight to Cusco. From the airport, we will proceed to the Sacred Valley.
  • Today is a day to adjust to the altitude. The day will be mostly at leisure, to enjoy the Wifala Harmony Hotel, and with optional activities for those up for it.
  • Guests highly rate Wifala Harmony Hotel in Urubamba (Peru’s Sacred Valley) for its whimsical organic architecture, serene gardens, and highly personalized service. Praised as a “magical” and peaceful retreat, visitors love the spacious rooms, on-site restaurant, and beautiful natural setting
  • We have designed the tour to start at a high altitude. As you adjust to 11,000 feet, the lower altitudes will be much easier to handle. Machu Picchu, for example, is at 8,000 feet.
  • The Sacred Valley of the Incas contains many famous, beautiful and spiritual Inca ruins. It was called the Sacred Valley because it contains some of the best land in the region considered sacred to the Incas, especially the Emperor or Inca himself.
  • In the evening, we will have a meeting and go over the outline of the tour.

Day 3; Saturday September 12

Guided tour of the Pisac ruins & market and Ollantaytambo Fortress.

  • Pisac is a village known for its lively handicrafts market in the main square. A path winds from the square past agricultural terraces up to the Pisac Archaeological Park, a hilltop Incan citadel with ancient temples, plazas and the Intihuatana, a stone structure thought to have been a sundial. Views from the top stretch across the Quitamayo gorge and surrounding valley.
  • The Pisac Market is one of the most famous markets in Peru, drawing many visitors to its famous Sunday market when indigenous Quechua communities from the surrounding highlands come to Pisac to sell their produce and stock up on supplies for the week.
  • Ollantaytambo, called Ollanta by the locals, is an ancient Inca temple as well as a village located in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. During the Inca Empire, Ollantaytambo was the royal estate of Emperor Pachacuti, who conquered the region, and built the town and a ceremonial center. At the time of the Spanish conquest of Peru, it served as a fortress for Manco Inca Yupanqui, leader of the Inca resistance.

Day 4: Sunday September 13

After breakfast, we will proceed to the salt mines of Maras, Moray and our lunch at MIL restaurant.

  • Moray is a fascinating archaeological site consisting of unusual Inca ruins, mostly consisting of several terraced circular depressions, the largest of which is approximately 100 feet deep.
  • The Salt Mines of Maras are nested among the hillside, view over 4,500 colorful ancient salt pools that predate the Inca civilization. Learn how villagers have harvested precious Peruvian salt in these man-made pools for over 500 years
  • Highlight lunch at the world-renowned MIL restaurant, right at the Moray site!

Day 5: Monday September 14

Transfer from Hotel to the Ollanta Train for our trip to Aguas Calientes & Machu Picchu!

  • The Ollanta train offers a unique opportunity to connect with the beautiful scenery along the way to Machu Picchu, making passengers feel as if they were somehow part of the nature that surrounds them! Oftentimes, train ride include a fashion show and the opportunity to buy beautiful alpaca woolen goods.
  • Once we arrive in Aguas Calientes, we will proceed to the majestic Machu Picchu!
  • Machu Picchu rests in the middle of a tropical mountain forest, in an extraordinarily beautiful setting. It is the most amazing urban creation of the Inca Empire; its giant walls, terraces and ramps seem as if they have been cut naturally from the continuous rock escarpments. Machu Picchu is one of the most important cultural sites in the world; the stonework of the site remains as one of the greatest examples of the use of a natural raw material to provide outstanding architecture which is totally appropriate to the surroundings.

Day 6: Tuesday Sepember 15

Early morning bus from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu.

  • Free afternoon to explore Machu Picchu at your leisure. Those doing the Huayna Picchu will take the early bus up to Machu Picchu and proceed to Huayna Picchu. Huayna Picchu is 1000 higher than Machu Picchu and is a rigorous hike.

Day 7: Wednesday September 16

Train ride back to Cusco. Visit Chinchero.

  • Visit Chinchero, known to the Incas at the birthplace of the rainbow! Chinchero is the most typical and picturesque town of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, it brings together twelve Andean indigenous communities that are still governed by the Inca organization system called “Ayllu”. Chinchero is one of the few places where it seems that time does not pass, since Inca traditions and culture still persist. The people who inhabit it are of Inca blood and the predominant language is Quechua, although almost all the inhabitants of this area speak Spanish as a second language.

After breakfast, tour of Koricancha Temple & Sacsayhuaman.

  • The religious complex of Koricancha contains the Temple of the Sun which is considered not only the most sacred site or huaca in the Inca religion but also considered the very center of the Inca world. The site is also known as the “Golden Enclosure” dedicated to the highest gods in the Inca pantheon, such as the Creator god Viracocha, the moon goddess Quilla and especially to Inti, the god of the sun.
  • The Sacsayhuaman (meaning ‘Royal Eagle’) fortress-temple complex was constructed during the reign of Pachacuti (1438-1471 CE). Its massive, well-built walls remain today as a testimony not only to Inca power but also the skills of Inca architects and their approach of blending their monumental structures harmoniously into the natural landscape. The Sacsayhuaman is still used today for Inca-inspired ceremonies.

Day 9: Saturday September 19

Visit to Qenqo, Puka Pukara & Tambomachay.

  • In Quechua, Qenqo means labyrinth. In the worldview of Andean culture, this place was built to invoke “Kaypacha”, the legendary snake that gives rise to life. The Qenqo Temple was used by the Incas as a bridge to communicate with the gods of the Sun, the earth, the mountains, the moon and the stars. Everything in Qenqo has a special mystique: the amphitheater, the labyrinths, the canals and the sacrificial room.
  • The secluded Puka Pukara is one of the main archaeological sites in Peru. The name is from a Quechua word meaning “red fortress”, because the setting sun changes the color of the rocks to red. It is traditionally referred to as a fortress, however, its function is still a mystery.
  • Tambomachay is another fascinating Inca archaeological site. Its precise function is unknown, but it may have served as a ceremonial site, an Inca spa, or a military outpost—or perhaps a mix of all three. The site is also known as El Baño del Inca, or the Bath of the Inca. This refers to the theory that it was a spa for the Inca ruler, and the wider Inca nobility. It’s a secluded and tranquil spot, and the constantly flowing water would certainly have provided for all the Inca’s spa needs. But there was probably more going on at Tambomachay than just high-altitude bathing. Considering the presence of precise water features at Tambomachay, and its construction on a natural spring, it’s likely that it served a ceremonial function connected with water. The trapezoidal niches could also have served a ceremonial purpose.

(2) What insurance should we buy?
(A) Medical evacuation and repatriation insurance is provided. Any other travel insurance is optional. Peter can assist you with looking into any other insurance you may be interested in.

(3) Where is a good place to start with looking at policies?
(A) Squaremouth is like the Google of travel insurances. It’s a good place to look at what types of coverage you’d like and the costs. Each company in their search engine will offer you a quote.

(4) Is the food and water safe in Peru?
(A) The food is among the best in the world. Peru is a foodie destination. As far as water, I always recommend bottled water. I drink bottled water in the US.

(5) Will we have a chance to meet before the tour?
(A) Yes. We will have a “meet and greet” over Zoom and then 7 classes on Andean Shamanism. I have sent the schedule and links in an email.
